UNIQUE TURKEY ART
In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, also known as “Turkey Day” across the countries that celebrate it, we’re sharing some of our favorite turkey art reflecting the uniqueness of this fabled feathered creature.
What is commonly referred to as the first Thanksgiving stems from a three-day feast in October 1621 between the Native American Wampanoag people and survivors of the Mayflower, a group of English Protestant settlers known as the Puritans, after their first harvest in the New World. The peace between the Native Americans and the settlers was short-lived, yet the celebration of that initial autumn harvest lives on today, evolving from celebrations by individual colonies and states to a nationally-proclaimed Thanksgiving holiday across the US by then President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
How and when the turkey comes into play in our Thanksgiving tradition is still a matter of much historical debate, with many asserting that the turkey wasn’t a focus of the feast until 1863, ushered in by the “Godmother of Thanksgiving” Sarah Joseph Hale.
